Capoeira Angola OGUM UK brings authentic Brazilian martial arts and cultural education to Lancaster. Founded by Mestre Carcara' in Naples, Italy in 2000, the organisation has spent over two decades promoting Afro-Brazilian culture from north-east Brazil. Instructor Fujão established the Lancaster group in December 2023, expanding the organisation's presence into the UK.
The group specialises in teaching Capoeira Angola—a traditional Brazilian martial art combining dance, music and acrobatics with deep historical roots in African and Brazilian heritage. They serve adults and children of all ages and skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced capoeiristas. Their approach emphasises cultural authenticity and educational value, having previously worked with at-risk communities in Naples using Capoeira as a transformative tool.
What distinguishes Capoeira Angola OGUM is their lineage and expertise. Operating under the guidance of Mestre Carcara', a student of Mestre Gato Preto—one of Brazil's greatest Capoeira masters—they offer genuine instruction grounded in tradition rather than commercialised versions of the art. Beyond Capoeira itself, they deliver complementary courses in Afro-Brazilian dance (Dança dos Orixas) and Brazilian percussion (Batucada), providing comprehensive cultural immersion.
The Lancaster group hosts regular classes and workshops, including their inaugural 2026 workshop featuring Mestre Carcara' and concluding with Lancaster's first public Roda (traditional circle). They welcome all practitioners and those curious about this living cultural practice.
